Verizon iPhone rumor mill cranks up on Apple CDMA order

Latest batch of Verizon iPhone rumors based on Apple CDMA order

Millions are enamored with their iPhones. However they could live without AT and T. For years, this love/hate relationship has spawned Verizon iPhone rumors. Rumors surfaced again Monday quoting unknown sources about a Verizon iPhone release in January 2011. Verizon iPhone rumors emerge in stories that universally cite the obvious clue: a large order by Apple to Qualcomm for the CDMA chipsets that make Smartphone’s work on Verizon’s network. The question has been “if,” not when the Verizon iPhone will appear, ever since AT and T landed the exclusive iPhone carrier agreement when Apple introduced it in 2007.

Verizon iPhone rumors a blogosphere standard

Verizon iPhone rumors are so common that most individuals pay them no mind. But this time the Verizon iPhone rumor is different, said Steve Cheney at Tech Crunch. Cheney said he was confident the rumors will finally become fact because of the DNA of Smartphone components that are traced through the supply chain. This is a geeky way to say that a huge order by Apple for CDMA chipsets from Qualcomm for a December Verizon iPhone run means the Verizon iPhone is due next January. Although Cheney said data about the Apple/Qualcomm order comes from “sources with knowledge of the entire situation,” many are taking him at his word.

Large sales predicted for Apple Qualcomm iPhone

Apple’s AT and T GSM network doesn’t work with CDMA, the wireless standard for Verizon’s network. Although Apple’s CDMA order has not been confirmed as fact, Business Week joined Tech Crunch in reporting that Apple suppliers are gearing up for making parts for a Verizon iPhone. Apple has sold more than 50 million iPhones since the phone’s introduction in 2007. Business Week quoted UBS AG analyst John Hodulik as saying that ending AT and T’s exclusive iPhone contract will grant Verizon a leg up on its competitors on the Smartphone playing field. Verizon customers, who numbered 92.8 million at the end of the first quarter, may purchase 3 million iPhones a quarter, he estimates.

On cue, bloggers cry wolf

This round of Verizon iPhone rumors could be an additional false start for iPhone users who think AT and T is the only blemish on their ultimate device. The growing list of Verizon iPhone rumors, summarized by PC World began in Sept. 2008 when unknown tipsters predicted an early 2009 release. That first announcement lead to other alleged Verizon iPhone release dates popping up in April 2009 (Early 2010), Oct. 2009 (70 percent chance in 2010), Oct. 2009 (late 2010), Jan 2010, (Jan. 2010!), March 2010, (late 2010) and May 2010 (early 2011).
